Best Films for Spooky Season 2023: Thrillers, Classics, and More

I love fall, and enjoying Halloween (although I haven't made the effort to get in costume for years) is a big part of it. For me, scary movies and horror films help me embrace the cool chill and increasing amount of darkness thrust upon us in October. There's no way that I will watch all of the films/shows below in October, but they're on my list of films to choose from if I want to feel a little spooky, a little horrified, and a little scared:

If I'm in the mood for alien / AI thrillers:

  • Annihilation
  • Arrival
  • Ex Machina
  • Alien
  • Prometheus

...with a throwback vibe:

  • The X Files
  • Stranger Things

not currently sure how to explain this grouping, it just makes sense to me in relation to the films/shows above and below them:

  • Lovecraft Country
  • Pan's Labrynth
  • Cabinet of Curiosities
  • Velvet Buzzsaw
  • Nightcrawler
  • Drive

if I want to watch iconic/classic, or slasher:

  • Christine
  • Scream (II-V, I recently watched I and VI).
  • Halloween
  • Carrie (original. recently watched the remake.)

if I want adolescent angst and moody production vibes:

  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
  • Wednesday
  • Riverdale

if I want horror/thriller that's going to make me think, too:

  • Parasite
  • The Babadook
  • Hereditary
  • Midsommar
  • The Night House
  • Suspiria
  • The Woman in Black
  • The Lighthouse
  • Psycho
  • The Shining
  • The Silence of the Lambs
  • Get Out
  • Us
  • Nope
  • Run Rabbit Run

if I want to feel eerie or spooky but not watch anything gruesome or too much:

  • Coraline
  • Wendell & Wild
  • Corpse Bride
  • Frankenweenie
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas

if I want to explore the sub genre of horror comedy:

  • Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
  • Young Frankenstein
  • Zombieland
  • Scream Queens
  • The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

Are any of these on your list?
