Preview Film Studies Lesson: Ex Machina Opening Sequence Shot by Shot Analysis Practice

The Answer Key for this shot by shot analysis activity of the opening sequence of the film Ex Machina is essentially the practice activity, the shot by shot (SxS) breakdown, completely filled in.

The “Analysis Practice” PDF is print ready and removes most of the notes from the answer key, leaving room for students to practice making notes and observations themselves. In particular, students will practice identifying the distance and angle of shots, and have ample opportunity to really examine how mise en scene (lighting, framing, props) informs theme. At the end of the SxS breakdown table are 3 questions to help students bring their film analysis notes and observations together to see how the cinematic details support theme.

The “Digital Download” PDF includes instructions on how to access a Google Docs version of the “Analysis Practice” PDF.

**PLEASE NOTE — This activity requires that you watch a scene from the film, Ex Machina, but it does NOT include the scene itself. You may be able to find it on YouTube, OR you must purchase, rent, or borrow the film yourself in order to complete this lesson.
