Coraline Act 3 Film Analysis Frame Examples
Shots to analyze in Act 3 of Coraline. Contrast/map development from Act 1, 2, and 3.
In Act 3, Coraline faces off with Other Mother/The Beldam and gets her parents back. But the story doesn't stop there, the Beldam pursues the key that locks the little door, chasing Coraline even into the real world. Coraline sneaks out in the night to drop the key in the well that we saw her discover in Act 1, though she's a bit more clever than merely dropping the key in, as she tricks the Beldam's hand into falling down the well, too. This ultimately ensures the safety of her, her family, and all those living at the Pink Palace.
As you reflect on moments from Act 3, ask yourself...

What causes Coraline's change in attitude towards the Other World? Which cinematic/visual details illuminate Coraline's change in perspective? And how much of this illustration do you think reflects Coraline's state of mind versus might be "controlled" by the Beldam? Which visual/cinematic details support your ideas?
